What does a concrete patio installation include?

A complete concrete patio installation covers layout, excavation, base prep, forms, steel reinforcement, the pour, finishing, control joints and curing. Here is how we build a patio, step by step.

  1. Layout. We mark the shape and size with you on site, and plan where water will drain.
  2. Excavation and grading. We remove sod and soil and shape the ground so water runs away from your house.
  3. Base prep. We bring in gravel and compact it so the slab sits on firm, even ground.
  4. Forms. We set forms to your shape, including curves and steps.
  5. Reinforcement. We place steel in the slab to help it hold together.
  6. The pour. Concrete goes in, gets leveled and smoothed, and is worked into the edges.
  7. Finishing. We finish the surface the way you picked: broom, exposed aggregate, colored or stamped.
  8. Control joints. We cut joints so any cracks form along straight lines instead of across the middle. We add joints where the patio meets your house or other slabs.
  9. Curing. We protect the new concrete while it cures so it gets strong.

How thick should a concrete patio be?

A standard backyard patio uses a standard slab. A hot tub, outdoor kitchen or heavy grill island needs a thicker, stronger slab, and we plan for that before the pour.

Tell us early if you plan to add heavy features later. It is much easier to build the right slab the first time than to fix one that is too thin.

Can you add onto an existing concrete patio?

Yes, in most cases. We can extend a patio by pouring a new slab next to the old one and tying the two together. The old slab needs to be in good shape, with no major sinking or cracking.

  • We tie the new slab to the old one and add a joint between them.
  • We build a firm base under the new section so it doesn’t settle away from the old one.
  • The new concrete will not match the old color right away. It gets closer over time, and a color or stamped finish can blend the two.
  • If the old slab has sunk, tilted or crumbled, it is usually better to replace it and pour one new patio.

Not sure if your slab can be extended? Send us a photo and we’ll take a look.

What finish options do you have for a concrete patio?

Most Roseville patios get a broom finish, exposed aggregate, colored concrete or a stamped pattern. A broom finish is the most common because it gives good grip and costs less than decorative options.

Broom finish

Fine lines across the surface for grip. Clean, simple and affordable.

Exposed aggregate

The top layer is washed away to show the stones inside for a textured look.

Colored concrete

Color is added to the concrete, so it runs through the surface. Light colors stay cooler in the sun.

Stamped concrete

Patterns that look like flagstone, slate, brick or wood plank. See our stamped concrete patios for patterns and color options.

How does Roseville’s heat affect a concrete patio?

Roseville summers are long, hot and dry, so a patio’s color, texture and shade matter. Dark concrete gets hot under bare feet, and light-colored finishes stay cooler. The outdoor living season here runs from spring well into fall, so a patio gets a lot of use.

Pick a lighter color

Light tan, cream and light gray reflect more heat than dark colors.

Use a textured finish

A broom or exposed aggregate finish helps with grip and glare.

Plan for shade

Think about a pergola, shade sail or a tree on the west side.

Pour at the right time

We plan pours around the heat so new concrete doesn’t dry out too fast.

How much does a concrete patio cost in Roseville?

The cost of a concrete patio in Roseville depends on size, thickness, finish, site prep, add-ons and permits. Every backyard is different, so we give free quotes instead of one-size-fits-all numbers.

Size

More square feet means more concrete, base and labor.

Finish

A broom finish usually costs less than exposed aggregate, colored or stamped concrete.

Site prep

Sloped yards, tear-out of an old slab, tree roots or hard-to-reach backyards add work.

Strength

Heavy features like hot tubs need a thicker slab

New patio or extension

An extension has to tie into the old slab.

Add-ons

Steps, borders, seat walls and curves add time and material.

Permits and HOA

Some patios need a city permit, and HOAs may need to approve the plan.

Concrete patio FAQs

How long does a concrete patio last?

A well-built concrete patio lasts for many years. The base, thickness, joints and curing all affect how long it holds up. Tree roots, poor drainage and heavy loads can shorten that. A patio on a firm base with good drainage will usually outlast one that was rushed.

We’ll tell you when it’s ready. Walking comes first, then furniture, and heavy items like a hot tub or outdoor kitchen come last. Concrete keeps getting stronger for weeks, so the longer you wait before adding heavy items, the better.

Any concrete can crack, because concrete shrinks as it dries. Control joints give the slab straight, planned lines to crack along. A good base, steel and proper curing keep cracks small. If a crack does show up, it can usually be repaired.

Yes, but the slab has to be built for the weight. Hot tubs and outdoor kitchens need a thicker, stronger slab and a solid base. Tell us before the pour, not after. We’ll plan the slab to match what you want to add.

Concrete usually costs less on large patios and goes in faster. Pavers are easier to repair one piece at a time. Stamped concrete gives you a paver-like look in one pour. Read our guide on stamped concrete vs pavers to compare them side by side.

It depends on the size and location. Some patios need a city permit, and an HOA may need to approve your plan. Patios on private property often have different rules than work in the public right of way. We’ll tell you what your project needs before we start.
