What is stamped concrete?

Stamped concrete is regular concrete that is colored and pressed with texture mats while it is still wet, so it looks like stone, brick, slate or wood. You get the look of expensive materials with the strength of a poured slab.

Color goes into the mix or onto the surface. Texture mats are pressed in to make the pattern. A sealer finishes the job and protects the color. Decorative concrete is the wider group, and it also includes colored concrete and custom-formed shapes.

What colors does stamped concrete come in?

Stamped concrete comes in a wide range of custom colors, from warm tans and browns to cool grays and charcoal. We help you match the color to your home, roof, trim and landscaping.

Most projects use a base color plus a second tone that adds depth, so the surface looks like natural stone and not one flat color. A sealer deepens the color and helps keep it from fading.

Where can you use stamped concrete?

You can use stamped concrete on patios, driveways, walkways and pool decks. It works anywhere you would pour a regular slab and want a better look.

Stamped concrete patios

A stamped concrete patio turns a plain backyard slab into an outdoor living space. Patterns and colors can match your home or your pool. Read more about our concrete patios and how we build them.

Stamped concrete driveways

A stamped concrete driveway adds curb appeal that a plain gray driveway can’t. It is built on the same solid base as any driveway. Read more about concrete driveway installation for the full process.

Walkways and entries

A stamped walkway ties your front door, driveway and yard together with one pattern.

Pool decks

Stamped pool decks give you a textured surface with good grip. Ask us about an anti-slip sealer. In Roseville’s sun, lighter colors stay cooler under bare feet.

Stamped concrete vs pavers: which is better?

Stamped concrete usually costs less on large areas, installs faster and has no joints for weeds to grow in. Pavers are easier to repair one piece at a time and handle shifting ground better. Both can last a long time when they are installed and maintained well.

Pattern
Stamped concrete
Pavers
Upfront cost
Often lower on large areas, close on small ones
Often higher on large areas
Look
Seamless, with a pattern and color pressed in
Individual stones with visible joints
Maintenance
Reseal every few years, clean as needed
Refill joint sand, re-level settled stones
Cracking
Can crack like any slab, joints control where
Flex with the ground and rarely crack
Repairs
Harder, and color matching takes care
Easy, swap individual pavers
Install time
One pour, then cure
Longer install, usable right away
Grip when wet
Good with texture and anti-slip sealer
Naturally skid resistant

Choose stamped concrete if you want a seamless look and a lower price on a big patio or driveway. Choose pavers if you want easy repairs and don’t mind refilling joint sand. Not sure? Ask us and we’ll talk it through.

How much does stamped concrete cost in Roseville?

The cost of stamped concrete in Roseville depends on size, pattern, color, base prep, access and permits. Stamped concrete costs more than plain broom-finish concrete because of the color, the stamping labor and the sealer. Every project is different, so we give free quotes.

Size

More square feet means more concrete, base and labor.

Pattern and color

Multiple colors and detailed patterns take more time.

Thickness and base

Driveways need a stronger slab than patios.

Tear-out

Removing an old slab adds work.

Sealer

Better sealers cost more but last longer.

Access

If a truck can’t reach the site, the crew may need extra labor or a pump.

Permits

Driveway work in the public right of way needs a city permit.

How do you seal and maintain stamped concrete?

Seal stamped concrete after it cures, then reseal it every few years. Sealer protects the color from sun fading, blocks stains and makes cleaning easy.

  • Let the concrete cure fully before the first seal. We’ll tell you when.
  • Sweep and rinse the surface regularly. Use a mild cleaner for stains.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and lawn fertilizer on the slab. Some of them can damage concrete.
  • Reseal when the surface looks dull or water stops beading.
  • Roseville’s strong sun fades color faster on unsealed concrete, so don’t skip resealing.

Stamped concrete FAQs

How long does stamped concrete last?

Stamped concrete can last for many years when it sits on a solid base and is sealed regularly. Heat, UV, heavy loads and skipped resealing shorten that. The color fades without sealer even though the concrete itself stays strong. Regular cleaning and resealing keeps it looking good.

It can be when wet, mostly because of the sealer. The stamped texture helps with grip, and you can ask us about an anti-slip sealer for patios and pool decks. Tell us where the surface will get wet and we’ll recommend the right finish.

Any concrete can crack, and stamped concrete is no different. A good base, steel reinforcement and control joints keep cracks small and in the right place. On stamped work, joints are often cut along the pattern lines so they blend in. Cracks that do show up can usually be repaired, though matching color takes care.

Sometimes. If your old slab is solid with only minor surface wear, a stamped overlay can give it a new pattern and color. If the slab is cracked, sunken or breaking apart, replacing it is the better choice. We’ll look at your slab and tell you which makes sense.

Yes, color can fade over time, especially in strong sun like we get in Roseville. A good sealer blocks UV and protects the color. Resealing on schedule keeps the color rich. Skipping the sealer is the fastest way to a faded patio.

We’ll tell you when it’s ready. Walking comes first, then furniture, then heavier items. The sealer goes on after the concrete has fully cured, so the surface may look a little different once it is sealed.
